   This isn’t in some rural back water in the Outer Hebrides, this location is just eight miles from the centre of York, and half a mile from the main  A64 road to Leeds!

   When David approached us, we  were sure we could help quicker and much more cost-effectively than the national grid. Furthermore, despite  support from the National Farmers Union to understand  the demands of the National Grid, that fee was only if  he dug the 1100 meter trench himself from the sub-  station.

Having been recommended to us by a friend, we were able to save David more than £40,000. Installing an Outback power 6KW inverter / Charger system, solar power and batteries, David’s farm is now backed up by his unique tractor driven generator and he has already seen substantial savings. His fuel bill will be reduced by 80% as well as no more monthly bills from the grid.

David still uses his three-phase generator for welding and two  large machines, we plan to expand and convert what he has  to three phase in the future.

Having a remote farm in Cornwall sounds idyllic, but with a £50,000 fee to connect to the grid, generators used to be the only option for electricity supply until Off Grid / Stand Alone Systems became a more reliable and convenient option.

We’ve installed an Outback FlexPower2 6kw inverter charger system, with two 80Amp Outback charge controllers powered by 24 260W British made SunSolar modules charging 24 x 1000AH 2Volt battery cells.

Cornwall’s micro climate is perfect for Off Grid energy generation most of the year, which means the sun will supply everything needed on the farm ….. until the mist and rain comes in!

The system is programmed to auto start the generator when the batteries get low, or when big loads like the compressor or the water pumps come on.

Our client reckons he’ll have saved enough on diesel fuel for the system to be completely paid in 6 years, as well as the convenience of not running, or servicing a generator. The cows are much happier too!

The batteries should last 10 years, the control gear probably the same, and the solar panels are guaranteed to be producing 80% of their new power within 25 years.

In June this year, we returned to Cornwall to add six more 260w  Off Grid Solar Panels a new Outback Mate 3 controller, and a British made Off Grid Leading Edge 600W Wind Turbine . With the ability now to monitor on line with the Mate 3 connected to www.opticsre.com, we were able to tweak the settings to reduce generator usage significantly.

Having just a small amount of wind power, especially at night reduces cycling of the batteries, significantly increasing battery life .

Nick and Debbie recently took the plunge to live the dream and moved from the UK to Spain. Taking full advantage of low property prices in rural Catalonia, they bought two remote Spanish fincas with acres of land with olive groves and open space.

It’s a common situation in Spain where electricity supply is just about impossible to get in rural areas due to cost, and this case was no different… a whopping €30,000 with months of inspections, and waiting to get connected … not forgetting one of the highest bills in Europe!

Their new businesses,  Catalan Adventure  and  Ebroequestrian  in the Historic Mora D’Ebre offers a self-catering, private base from a beautifully located finca in the countryside. Ideally situated for climbing, trail riding, walking, or enjoying the superb scenery on their well trained horses and even not too far from the beach.

Xerogrid has installed two of the pre-wired Outback Power FlexPower One, 3kW all-in-one off-grid systems, with 9 x 260W solar panels and 600Ah solar battery storage.

We’ve been monitoring them online over the last few months.

Both houses have generator backup for recharging the batteries if there is no sun. But this is Spain and its hardly ever not sunny, so no generator needed since we installed 3 months ago!

Christian Van Outersterp Already ran a successful luxury camping business in a forest near York, England.

His next plan was to create a fairy trail around the nearby forest, where kids could roam in an exciting, electronics-free and safe environment, with a fairy museum/grotto in a cabin, complete with restaurant serving high quality, locally produced food and drinks.

He already had limited electricity on the camp side, but the power company couldn’t connect any further load to that.

He was quoted an exorbitant amount by the local electricity grid for a new connection and as the land was on a lease, Christian wasn’t willing to add value to the land at his cost.

He was also very keen to make this business sustainable, like the campsite.

“We had the ideal secluded rural location, and a successful business nearby.

We were shocked to get an eye watering new connection quote from the District Network Operator.

Its simply was not feasible to pay that much to connect, and then get ever increasing bills.

The prospect of running 100% off a diesel generator wasn’t a sustainable or convenient option. We heard about some European funding to support green businesses, we didn’t think off-grid solar was really an option in the UK until we found Outback Power and Xerogrid.”
